On the evening of July 13, 2024, a campaign rally for former President Donald J. Trump turned into chaos when a gunman opened fire toward the stage. The shooter, identified by authorities as 20‑year‑old Thomas Matthew Crooks, fired from a rooftop overlooking the venue. One rally‑goer was killed and two others critically injured before agents from the United States Secret Service (USSS) neutralized the attacker. Trump was grazed in the right ear but survived, and was quickly escorted offstage by Secret Service agents.

In a statement after the shooting, a Secret Service spokesperson said that the former president was “safe” and undergoing a medical evaluation. In a message on his platform, Trump thanked law‑enforcement and first responders. He wrote that a bullet “pierced the upper part of my right ear” and added “GOD BLESS AMERICA.”

The violence triggered immediate condemnation from political leaders across the spectrum. President Joe Biden said he had been briefed on the incident and called on Americans to reject political violence. He said: “There is no place in America for this type of violence.” House Speaker Mike Johnson vowed a full congressional investigation, saying “the American people deserve to know the truth.”

In the aftermath, the rally’s location — the fairgrounds in Butler County — was criticized for failing to detect credible threats. Reports indicated that the gunman had been spotted on the roof prior to the shooting by a bystander who alerted police. But by most accounts, no action was taken.

Within days of the attack, Trump vowed to return to Butler. In a post on his social-media platform he announced a new rally there, declaring “FIGHT, FIGHT, FIGHT!” and framing the return as honoring the firefighter who died in the shooting: Corey Comperatore, and others injured.

The shooting sent shockwaves through the 2024 presidential campaign. Some analysts said the event would reshape candidate security protocols and increase scrutiny of political rhetoric, while others predicted the incident could galvanize partisan fervor ahead of the election.

As of the morning after the attack many questions remained unanswered: investigators continued to examine how the gunman breached rally defenses and prepared the sniper shot. Security experts warned that the incident exposed major vulnerabilities in how campaign rallies are safeguarded.
